Average position is the mean ranking of your URL for queries over a time period. A position of 1 means you're first; position 10 means you're last on page 1. It's averaged across all times the page appeared.

## Example

If your page ranked #1 once and #5 once for a query, your average position is 3.

## How to apply it

Improve average position through content optimization, building backlinks, improving user engagement signals, fixing technical issues, and enhancing E-E-A-T signals.

> **Pro tip:** Focus on queries where you rank 5-15 (striking distance). Small improvements here can significantly boost traffic. Queries at 50+ need major work.
