Content freshness refers to how current your content is. For some queries (news, trending topics, 'best of [year]'), Google prefers fresh content. Updating existing content can boost rankings by signaling relevance.

## Example

Updating your 'Best Running Shoes' post from 2024 data to 2026 data and changing the title can restore lost rankings.

## How to apply it

Update content with new information regularly, change last-modified dates only with substantial updates, add current year to titles where relevant, publish timely content for trending topics.

> **Pro tip:** Not all content needs freshness. 'How to boil water' doesn't need 2026 updates. But 'Best AI tools' becomes stale quickly.
