Mobile-first indexing means Google predominantly uses the mobile version of content for indexing and ranking. This reflects how most users now access the web via mobile devices.

## Example

If your mobile site has less content than desktop, Google will only see and index the mobile content, potentially hurting rankings.

## How to apply it

Ensure mobile and desktop have the same content, use responsive design, check mobile usability in GSC, test with Mobile-Friendly Test tool.

> **Pro tip:** Check the User-Agent string in your server logs. If you see 'Googlebot-Mobile', that's what's indexing your site.
