Search intent (also called user intent or query intent) refers to the purpose behind a search query. Understanding intent is crucial for creating content that satisfies users and ranks well. The four main types are informational, navigational, commercial, and transactional.

## Example

Informational: 'how to tie running shoes'. Transactional: 'buy Nike Air Max'. Commercial: 'best running shoes 2026'. Navigational: 'Nike official site'

## How to apply it

Analyze the current SERP to understand what Google thinks the intent is. Match your content format (guide, product page, comparison, etc.) to the intent.

> **Pro tip:** If your content doesn't match search intent, you won't rank - no matter how good it is. Always check the SERP before creating content.
