Spam updates improve Google's ability to detect and demote websites using manipulative tactics like link spam, cloaking, keyword stuffing, and other violations of search guidelines.

## Example

Sites with purchased links, hidden text, or private blog networks dropping from rankings after a spam update.

## How to apply it

Avoid link schemes, don't use hidden text, ensure no cloaking, disavow toxic links if you have a penalty, follow Google's spam policies.

> **Pro tip:** Spam updates can take weeks to fully roll out. If hit, address violations thoroughly rather than making quick fixes.
