**The SEO KPIs that matter most are conversions from organic search and non-branded organic clicks; everything else explains why those two moved.** A useful KPI set has four levels: business results, search demand captured, visibility, and the technical and content health that supports them. Pick one or two KPIs per level, measure them the same way every month, and report the top level first.

## The four levels

| Level | KPI | Source | How to calculate |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Business | Conversions from organic search | Analytics / CRM | Leads, sign-ups or orders with organic search as the source |
| Business | Organic conversion rate | Analytics | Organic conversions ÷ organic sessions |
| Business | Revenue or pipeline from organic | Analytics / CRM | Value of organic conversions |
| Demand captured | Non-branded clicks | Search Console | Clicks with a regex filter excluding brand names |
| Demand captured | Branded clicks | Search Console | Clicks matching the brand regex |
| Demand captured | CTR against expected | Search Console | Actual CTR ÷ the CTR your position usually earns |
| Visibility | Ranking ladder | Search Console or rank tracker | Queries in the top 3, top 10 and top 20 |
| Visibility | Non-branded impressions | Search Console | Impressions excluding brand queries |
| Visibility | AI answer visibility | AI visibility tracking | Mentions and citations of your brand in AI answers for target prompts |
| Health | Indexed key pages | Search Console → Indexing | Share of the pages you want indexed that are indexed |
| Health | Core Web Vitals | Search Console / PageSpeed Insights | Share of URLs passing LCP, INP and CLS |
| Health | Content decay | Search Console, compare mode | Pages that lost 20%+ of meaningful clicks |

## Choosing KPIs for your situation

| Situation | Lead KPI | Supporting KPIs |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Lead generation or SaaS | Organic sign-ups or leads | Non-branded clicks to product and comparison pages |
| E-commerce | Organic revenue | Non-branded clicks to category pages, ranking ladder |
| Publisher | Non-branded clicks | Impressions, CTR against expected, decay |
| New site | Indexed key pages, then impressions | Ranking ladder |
| Recovery after a drop | Non-branded clicks vs pre-drop baseline | Position on lost queries |

## Metrics to drop or demote

- **Third-party authority scores** as a goal. They are tool estimates; links matter, the score does not.
- **Total keywords ranked.** Ranking at position 80 for more queries adds nothing.
- **Average position for the whole site.** It moves when you gain new low rankings, which makes good news look bad.
- **Bounce rate.** It depends on page type and tracking setup, and says little about SEO.
- **Total sessions including brand.** Brand demand is real, but it is not what SEO earned.

## Setting targets

Set targets from a forecast, not from a wish. The [SEO forecasting](https://anotherseoguru.com/en/resources/seo-forecasting) method estimates what specific fixes will add to non-branded clicks; your organic conversion rate turns that into leads or sales. Agree the target as a range, and review it quarterly.

## Measuring consistently

- Use the same brand regex every month. Changing it changes every non-branded number.
- Compare with the same period last year as well as last month.
- Leave out the last two or three days in Search Console, which are still filling in.
- Annotate releases and Google updates so changes have context.

AnotherSEOGuru App puts most of these on one screen: non-brand filters, the ranking ladder, a search health score built from click momentum, CTR against expected positions and top-10 coverage, annotations for your releases and confirmed Google updates, and AI visibility tracking. The [live demo](https://app.anotherseoguru.com/demo) shows them on sample data. For how to present KPIs to a client, see [SEO reporting](https://anotherseoguru.com/en/resources/seo-reporting).

**What are the most important SEO KPIs?**

Conversions from organic search and non-branded organic clicks. Visibility and technical KPIs explain why those moved.

**How do you measure SEO success?**

Compare non-branded clicks and organic conversions with a baseline and with the same period last year, and tie the changes to the work shipped by comparing affected pages before and after.

**Is organic traffic a good KPI?**

Only if you split out branded traffic. Total organic traffic mixes what SEO earned with demand created by ads, PR and word of mouth.

**How many SEO KPIs should I track?**

Four to six in a report: one or two business KPIs and a few that explain them. Track more internally if you need them for diagnosis.
