Hosting and your domain are the foundations of every website - and the two decisions most businesses make in a rush, on price alone. Bad hosting quietly costs you speed (and therefore Google rankings), uptime (and therefore customers), and security. This guide covers what to check before you pay, realistic 2026 pricing, and the mistakes we see on almost every website build.

Domain: What to Choose
- Local extension (.gr, .co.uk, .de…): the obvious choice for a business targeting one country. Signals locality to users and search engines. Cost: roughly €10–15/year.
- .com: for international targeting (tourism, exports, SaaS). If you serve both, register both and set one as primary with 301 redirects.
- Avoid “exotic” extensions (.xyz, .site, .online) for a business brand - they undermine trust and are often treated as spam signals.
Registration tips: keep the domain in your own account (not the builder’s), enable auto-renew, turn on WHOIS privacy where available, and register the obvious variants before a competitor does. If you change registrars, schedule the transfer outside peak season so DNS does not stall during a campaign.
Hosting: What Actually Matters
Speed (and SEO)
Google measures Core Web Vitals - and the server is the first second of that equation. Ask for: NVMe storage, PHP 8.3+, HTTP/2 or HTTP/3, a serious cache layer (LiteSpeed or equivalent), and a server or CDN node near your market. Cheap €2/month hosting with an 800ms TTFB undermines every euro you spend on SEO or SEO-ready web design.
For tourism and e-commerce sites, measure TTFB on mobile 4G - not only office Wi-Fi. If first byte consistently sits above 400–500ms, no theme “optimization” will save the experience.
Hosting types and pricing
| Type | Cost/mo | For |
|---|---|---|
| Shared hosting | €3 – €10 | Small sites, blogs, low traffic |
| Managed WordPress | €10 – €35 | Business sites, moderate e-shops |
| VPS | €20 – €80 | Busy e-shops, multiple sites |
| Dedicated / Cloud | €80+ | High traffic, custom needs |
Do not compare “GB of disk” alone. What matters: PHP workers, inode limits, CPU throttle policy, and whether backups live on the same machine as production (they should not). For WooCommerce, see the e-commerce cost guide.
Security and backups
Free SSL (Let’s Encrypt) is now standard - without HTTPS you lose trust and a ranking signal. Ask for daily automated backups with easy restore to staging, a web application firewall (WAF), malware scanning, and account isolation on shared plans. Keep an offsite copy (Drive / S3) for critical sites.
Support that answers
Local-language support is worth a few euros more when something breaks the night before a campaign. Alternatively, a maintenance retainer means your partner owns the technical layer and hosting is chosen on speed, uptime SLA, and backups - not marketing slogans.
CDN, DNS, and email - the forgotten triangle
Even solid hosting benefits from a CDN (Cloudflare or similar) for static assets and bot protection. DNS should be fast, with a low TTL before migrations. Put business email on Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 - not on the same cheap hosting plan as the site. When you move hosts, SPF/DKIM/DMARC must be updated correctly or invoices land in spam.
The 5 Most Common Mistakes
- Domain in the builder’s name: if the relationship ends, they hold your brand hostage. Always in your own account with a recovery email you control.
- Hosting on price alone: the €5/month you “save” you pay back in a slow site and lost rankings.
- No backups - or backups only on the same server: a hack or bad update without an offsite copy means rebuilding from scratch.
- Email on the same hosting plan: use Workspace/365 for business email.
- Changing hosts without a DNS plan: wrong nameservers or premature TTL changes cause hours of downtime - and lost bookings in peak season.
If you are refreshing the site and the host at once, read the website redesign guide before you touch URLs.
How to Compare Hosting Quotes
Ask in writing for: datacenter location, uptime SLA, backup policy (how many copies, how far back, whether offsite), PHP worker/CPU limits, and what happens when you exceed them. Clarify whether SSL and CDN are included. If the offer only says “unlimited storage” with no technical detail, treat it as incomplete.
For business sites and e-shops, stage a test before migration: measure TTFB, mobile LCP, and form/checkout completion time. Lower DNS TTL 24–48 hours before nameserver changes so the cutover is fast with minimal downtime. If the site already earns organic traffic, schedule the move in a quiet period - not peak season.
FAQ
What's the total "cost of ownership" of a website?
Domain ~€12/year + hosting €120–400/year + optional maintenance. See the full picture in the website cost guide.
Can I change hosting without losing SEO?
Yes - moving hosting doesn’t change URLs, so it doesn’t affect rankings, as long as it’s done without downtime and with correct DNS handling. A redesign is a different matter and needs a migration plan.
Does my e-shop need different hosting?
Yes: more memory, object caching, and more frequent backups. See the e-commerce build guide.
Do I need managed WordPress, or is shared enough?
For a small business site, good shared or entry managed is fine. Once you add WooCommerce, multiple languages, or heavy plugins, managed or VPS becomes the safer choice.
How often should I change hosting?
Not “because two years passed.” Change when TTFB is consistently poor, support tickets go unanswered, or you outgrow resource limits. Measure before and after with Search Console and real-user Core Web Vitals.
