How to Rank Higher on Google (2026)

How to rank higher on Google: match one query to one page, fix indexation, improve the answer, earn relevant links, and measure in Search Console.

AnotherSEOGuru Editorial Team15 min read

Ranking higher on Google means moving one URL up for one query in the unpaid results. It is a sequence of specific changes, measured on that query, over weeks and months. There is no switch for first place. The order you see when you search your own business is also a poor test: location, language, and your own history change the page.

This guide is that sequence. It sits next to What is SEO? and SEO for beginners. If you want the work done against a commercial plan, start from SEO services and the published pricing.

What ranking higher actually means

A single “Google ranking” does not exist. The same business can be first for its name, on page two for a service in its city, and absent for a national head term. Progress is a movement on a named query, for a named URL.

Three surfaces matter in 2026, and they are not the same job:

  1. Organic results. The blue links. This is the usual meaning of “rank higher”.
  2. The local pack and Maps. For “near me” and city queries, the map is often above the links. Google documents three inputs: relevance, distance, and prominence.
  3. AI Overviews and other AI answers. A citation in an overview is a mention, not a classic position. A page can be cited and still sit lower in the links, or rank in the links and never be cited.

Search Console average position is the average of where the URL appeared. It will not match one logged-in search. Use it to see whether the query is moving.

How Google orders results

Google does not publish the weights in its ranking systems. Pages get selected when they are relevant, useful, accessible to Googlebot, and supported by signs that other people trust them. For the map pack, Google’s local documentation names relevance, distance, and prominence.

Treat these as jobs, not as a score you can add up:

JobWhat you controlWhat a change can show
RelevanceOne URL that matches the query’s intentThe right page starts to appear for that query
UsefulnessA clear answer, proof, and a title people clickImpressions hold and click-through rate rises
AccessIndexation, canonicals, mobile speedCoverage errors clear; the URL becomes eligible
TrustInternal links, relevant mentions, reviewsCompetitive queries become reachable
Local prominenceGoogle Business Profile, consistent details, reviewsMap visibility for queries with local intent

Keyword research tells you which queries are worth a page. On-page SEO is how that page answers them. Technical SEO is how Google reaches the page. Off-page SEO and link building are how other sites vouch for it. Local queries add local SEO and a Google Business Profile.

Step-by-step: how to rank higher on Google

Work one query at a time. A sitewide rewrite hides which change did anything.

Choose one query and one URL

Pick one query your customers type and one URL that should answer it. Two pages aimed at the same intent compete with each other.

Write the query the way a person types it, city included when that is the demand, and name the URL. “Hotel in Parikia” belongs on the page with rooms, location, and a way to enquire. Repeating the town inside “Our story” does not make that guide the right URL. If three posts already circle one phrase, keep the strongest and merge or redirect the others. The internal linking checklist finds those overlaps.

Confirm Google can index that URL

Check in Search Console that the URL is indexed, not excluded by noindex or robots.txt, and not canonicalized to a different page.

In URL inspection you want “URL is on Google” and a self-referencing canonical. Typical blockers are a leftover noindex from staging, a canonical that sends every service page to the homepage, and a soft 404 that returns 200 on an empty template. Until that is clean, more writing will not rank. A free SEO audit is a surface check. The URL inspection report is the decision.

Match the search intent already ranking

Look at the current results and note whether Google shows a guide, a service page, a local pack, or a comparison, then make your page that kind of answer.

Search in a private window and note the pattern. Guides mean an article can compete. Service pages plus a map pack mean the commercial page and the Business Profile are the assets, and a blog post only supports them. “Best” and “vs” results mean the searcher is comparing. A rent-a-car essay will not win “rent a car Paros” when the results are fleet and booking pages. Group the query first, the way the keyword research guide describes.

Put the answer at the top of the page

State the useful answer in the opening, use a title a searcher can scan, and cover the follow-up questions the query implies.

The title is the line in the result: what the page does, the query in ordinary language, short enough to display. Answer before the company history, then cover price if you publish one, who it is for, and how long it takes. Proof is a process you run, a photo, or a named place. SEO content covers structure. For ranking: one intent, one page, the answer first.

Fix technical blockers on that template

Repair indexation, canonicals, and slow mobile loading on the template this URL uses before you publish more pages like it.

A booking widget that delays the text is a template bug, so every page on it is slow. Fix the template. Page experience affects whether people stay, and Google uses it when evaluating a result. It will not rescue the wrong answer. Order the work as the technical SEO guide does: indexation, speed, mobile, then markup that matches the visible page.

Add internal links from pages that already earn impressions, with anchor text that describes this URL.

Sort Search Console by impressions and add one link from a strong page to the URL you want to move, in a sentence about that topic. The anchor should name the destination (“local SEO for hotels”). Keep a list of source, destination, anchor, and date. The glossary linking guide helps when many anchors say the same thing.

Earn relevant mentions or local prominence

For competitive queries, earn mentions from sites your buyers already trust. For local queries, complete Google Business Profile and keep your name, address, and phone consistent.

A handful of mentions from the same field is the useful version: a supplier, a local association, a publication customers read, a partner with a real page about the work. Google has published no minimum number of referring domains. Buying links to pass ranking credit violates Google’s spam policies. On a map query, the profile and reviews matter more than another directory. You cannot edit distance. A Parikia business can be the most relevant listing among businesses a similar distance away. It cannot become the closest result for a searcher in another town.

Measure one query, then change one thing

Watch impressions, average position, and click-through rate for that query in Search Console, and change the title, the page, or the links based on which number is weak.

Read a title change for a few weeks before you stack another edit on it. A rewritten page needs months. Use the query prioritization framework and the weekly Search Console playbook.

  • Impressions up, clicks flat. Rewrite the title and description.
  • Impressions flat, position stuck. Improve the answer, the internal links, or the mentions, matching what the current results reward.
  • The query never appears. There may be no demand, the page may be unindexed, or another URL on your site may be the one Google chose.

Filter out branded queries when you want to see whether non-brand demand is moving. A brand campaign can lift the sitewide chart while the service queries stay still.

Google search ranking tips worth doing first

These SEO ranking tips are the order of operations. Later ones cannot rescue a page that fails the earlier ones.

  1. One query, one URL.
  2. Confirm indexation before you rewrite.
  3. Match the result type already ranking.
  4. Answer in the opening, with a title a searcher can scan.
  5. Link from pages that get impressions.
  6. Add a few relevant mentions, or finish the local profile.
  7. Change one thing, then read Search Console.

How to increase organic traffic covers the case where impressions, rather than position, are the constraint.

How to improve website ranking across the site

Run the same sequence on queries already in positions 4–20. Those URLs have been shown and are not yet the ones people click. Record the URL Google shows, the URL you want, the intent, and the last change. A month there usually beats a new article for a phrase with no impressions.

Fix the shared cause. Five pages with one canonical bug need a template fix. Five thin pages need the commercial two rewritten and the rest combined. Add a URL only when no page answers a query you should own. This guide owns “how to rank higher on Google”. Hiring the work is SEO services. Cost is pricing. Link them, and keep them on different queries.

How to get to the top of Google

“The top” is a layout, and the layout depends on the query.

A brand search should show your homepage, your profile, and often a Maps listing. If a directory outranks the homepage for your name, fix the homepage title, confirm it is indexed, and use the profiles you control.

A local service query often puts the map pack above the links. A blog edit does not move you into that pack. The profile, category, reviews, and the page you link do. That work is in the local section below.

An informational query, including “how to rank first in search results”, rewards the page that answers with the real constraint: which query, which surface, how long. A competitive commercial query rewards a page with a clear offer, proof, internal links, and relevant mentions. When you need demand this week, SEO or Google Ads is the comparison: ads rent the placement while the page is built, and the placement goes away when the spend stops.

How to rank first for a keyword

“How to rank first on Google” and “how to rank first for keywords” are the same job: one query, one URL. First place is possible when three things are true together.

The keyword is specific enough. “Hotel” is a category. “Family hotel in Naoussa with parking” is a query one page can deserve. Broad head terms go to sites with wide coverage and a long record. Choose queries your page can be the best answer for, then expand. The keyword research guide is the selection method.

The page matches the results already ranking. Map pack plus service pages means your service page is the organic candidate and your profile is the pack candidate. A column of guides means the guide is the candidate. Publishing the other type and waiting spends the year.

Your site asks for it with one URL. When two URLs swap in Search Console for the same query, neither settles. Keep one, redirect or canonicalise the other, and point internal links at the survivor.

A manageable target is that this URL is the one Google shows for the query, average position moves toward the top of page one, and click-through rate holds up beside the results around it. Personalization means that position is not the same for every searcher.

Local rankings and Google Business Profile

When the query has local intent, organic tips are half the job. Google’s documentation says local results are based primarily on relevance, distance, and prominence.

Relevance, distance, and prominence

Relevance is how well the profile and the site match the query. The primary category does most of that work. A hotel filed under a generic service category will struggle for hotel queries even with a strong site. Secondary categories should be services you actually offer.

Distance is the searcher’s location, or the place named in the query. Each real location needs its own profile and its own page. Putting five cities into one profile name breaks Google’s representation guidelines.

Prominence is how well known the business is: reviews, links, articles, and directories that agree on the details. A complete new profile can appear. It will not pass an established business at the same distance on day one.

What to complete on the profile

Use the name on the sign and the invoices. A city or a keyword added to that name is a common cause of suspensions.

Finish the fields a customer uses: category, hours, phone, website, services, and photos of the real place. The website link should open the matching service or location page. Keep the name, address, and phone identical on the site, the profile, and any directory you claim. Ask customers who used the business for a review, and reply. Paying for stars is a guidelines risk.

The Google Business Profile masterclass walks the fields. Local SEO services are the version of this work run for a location.

What to leave alone

Posts show the profile is active. Google has not called them a ranking factor. Publish one when hours, a menu, or a pickup point actually changed.

Skip a second profile for a neighborhood you do not actually serve, and skip thin city pages that only swap the place name. A location page has to say something only that place can say.

AI Overviews and ranking

AI Overviews quote and cite pages for some queries. They are not a second Google with a private set of tags.

Google’s documentation on AI features says the baseline is ordinary Search eligibility: the page can be crawled, indexed, and shown with a snippet. The same documentation says structured data can help Google understand a page and does not guarantee a place in an AI Overview. Nothing you paste into the HTML forces a citation.

Make the page easy to quote and still worth opening:

  • Define the subject in the first paragraph, in words a person would repeat.
  • Keep the facts you want cited in the HTML, not only behind a click.
  • Name the author when they are in a position to answer.
  • Update the page when the fact changes, and show the date.
  • Use FAQ and HowTo markup only for questions and steps the page actually shows. Google stopped showing HowTo rich results in 2023. The markup helps a machine read a real procedure. It does not move a position by itself.

GEO, SEO, and AEO separates the labels. LLM citations covers assistant mentions. The commercial page is AI visibility. Measure what you can see: which queries show an overview, whether your pages can be indexed, and whether branded questions start to mention you. Search Console does not give most sites a “cited in an overview” column. A page written only to be quoted, with nothing for the person who clicks, is weak on both surfaces.

How long an improvement takes

These are the phases this site uses when scoping work. They are phases, not a date on which a position arrives.

SituationWhat you can read firstIndicative window
Title or snippet change on a URL that already gets impressionsClick-through rateA few weeks
Indexation fix on an important URLThe URL enters coverage as indexedDays to a few weeks
Local or long-tail page with a clear intent matchImpressions, then positionOften 2–4 months
Competitive non-brand queryPosition after coverage, links, and mentionsOften 6–12 months of compounding
Map pack for a new or neglected profileViews, calls, direction requestsWeeks for completeness, longer for prominence

Enquiries usually lag the first movement in position. On this site the minimum SEO term is six months, then month to month, as published on pricing. Foundations starts at €500 per month, net of VAT. The fee pays for the work in the table. It does not buy a position. Seasonal businesses should compare the same month last year.

Mistakes that hold a page down

  1. A thin page on a head term. If the results are established guides, the phrase in the H1 is not enough.
  2. Several URLs for one intent. They take turns, and none of them settles.
  3. A slogan where the query wants a fact. “We are the best” does not answer how, how much, or near me.
  4. Reading rank while logged in. Search Console’s average position is the record.
  5. A keyword in the Business Profile name. It risks a suspension. The category is the relevance field.
  6. Another post before the last one has impressions. You learn nothing from a URL Google has not shown.

Get a ranking plan

Bring the query, the URL that should own it, and Search Console access. The useful first deliverable is a short order of work: indexation, the page, the internal links, and whether the query is a map-pack query or an AI Overview query.

If you want that diagnosis run for you, review SEO services, the pricing, or get started and say which queries matter to the business. An audit is the right first step when the site is large or a redesign has just shipped: SEO audits. For a single location that lives or dies by the map, start with local SEO.

Frequently asked questions

Choose one query and one URL, confirm the URL is indexed in Search Console, match the type of page already ranking, improve the answer on the page, add internal links from stronger pages, and earn a few relevant mentions. Local queries also need a complete Google Business Profile. Measure impressions, position, and click-through rate before you change the next thing. A specific position cannot be guaranteed.
