Dwell Time

How long a user spends on your page before returning to search results.

On this page

What is Dwell Time

Dwell time is the duration between when a user clicks on a search result and when they return to the SERP. It's a potential user engagement signal - longer dwell time suggests the content satisfied the user's query.

Example

User clicks your result, spends 5 minutes reading, then goes back to Google. Dwell time = 5 minutes.

How to apply it

Increase dwell time by: creating comprehensive content, using engaging multimedia, improving readability, adding table of contents, using internal links to keep users on site.

Tip:Dwell time isn't directly measurable in analytics. Use 'time on page' as a proxy, but remember it's not identical - dwell time specifically measures return to SERP.
