What is Ranking Volatility

Ranking volatility refers to how much search rankings change. High volatility indicates many sites moving positions, often due to algorithm updates. Normal fluctuation is expected; extreme volatility suggests major changes.

Example

On a normal day, rankings might shift 1-2 positions. During a core update, you might see 10+ position swings across many queries.

How to apply it

Track rankings daily, compare to industry volatility sensors, don't overreact to minor fluctuations, investigate patterns during high volatility periods.

Tip:Use volatility tools to distinguish between site-specific issues and industry-wide algorithm changes. If everyone's volatile, it's probably an update.
