Redirect (301/302)

Sending users and search engines from one URL to another.

On this page

What is Redirect (301/302)

Redirects tell browsers and search engines that a page has moved. 301 redirects are permanent (pass full link equity), while 302 redirects are temporary (intended to be short-term, historically passed less equity).

Example

Migrating from HTTP to HTTPS requires 301 redirects: http://example.com/page → https://example.com/page

How to apply it

Use 301 for permanent moves, keep redirect chains under 3 hops, update internal links to point directly to final URLs, monitor for redirect loops.

Tip:After a site migration, keep old redirects in place for at least a year. Removing them too soon can lose accumulated link equity.
